day 115 - Kompong Kdei to Siem Reap

Sunday, 16 February 2014

Today we arrived in Siem Reap, after a 60km ride from Kompong Kdei. The road was busy with all kinds of vehicles ferrying tourists to and from Siem Reap which is used as a base from which to explore the ancient city of Angkor. Again, we came across lots of friendly, smiling people as we passed through villages and towns. One man accompanied Nicky some of the way asking about our travels and telling her a bit about himself. He was a male nurse and was on his way to work at the local health centre.

We had booked our accommodation in Siem Reap in advance so once we had found it and settled in, we went out for a long lunch. Later in the afternoon, we set out to find a mechanic who might be able to help us fix a part of Nicky's rear rack that had snapped. After a couple of attempts, we were directed to a mechanic who had some tools and a lot of determination. We may need to find a welder when we get back to Europe but we at least have a temporary fix!

In the evening, we headed into the city centre and explored a bit of the Old Market before trying a lovely vegetarian restaurant for dinner. The standard of food has been brilliant here so far and we really enjoyed our meal.

Tomorrow we plan to arrive at Angkor around sunrise in order to make the most of the quieter and cooler part of the day. There are many, many temples to see and of course, the mighty Angkor Wat which is the largest religious building in the world. We will report back on our Indiana Jones-esque adventures in the coming days.
