day 79 - Hoi An to Quang Ngai

Saturday, 11 January 2014

We cycled from Hoi An to Quang Ngai today. Both of us were feeling a bit low in energy and the heavy traffic on the highway took a bit of the fun out of it today. We contemplated taking a more coastal route into Quang Ngai which would have added an extra 30km to the journey, but we decided over lunch to take the more direct route which ended up being 117km.

As it was a Saturday, we passed lots of venues where people were celebrating weddings. We saw almost as many funeral processions. There was often karaoke or dance music coming from the wedding venues. With each funeral procession, a solemn, more traditional sounding music was played from a van.

We arrived into Quang Ngai mid afternoon and after scouting out a few different hotels, we settled on one and made ourselves at home for the evening. It's a big town, with a population of over 100,000 so we had no trouble finding a restaurant. We had a bit of a lost in translation moment with the waitress and we ended up with enough food to feed six people! We did our best to ensure there was little food wasted and then had a wander through the town after dinner. Tomorrow we will continue on further south to Hoai Nhon and then onwards in the direction of Nha Trang.
